Charles Evans - Watercolour Landscapes

Charles studied at Lincoln College of Art. He turned to watercolour because he says: "As many artists have discovered, it captures the beautiful sense of atmosphere, haziness, dampness and watery skies of the British landscape."

In the mid seventies there was no living to be made out of such art, so he turned his attention to catering and had a long and successful career.

Whilst still working in that trade, he was comissioned by the National Coal Board to paint a series of paintings of pits and pit villages. This led to a very long and fruitful alliance with the Coal Board who comissioned painting of either dark and gloomy pit scenes, or dark overcast moorland scenes. Many of these paintings were presented to prominent MP's who visited various pit situations.

The Coal Board also sponsored his first one-man exhibition held at the Headrow Gallery, Leeds, in 1983. It was opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and featured on Yorkshire Television. This resulted in all 69 paintings being sold at preview. After that he held further successful one-man or mixed exhibitions up and down the country.

In 1998 he was commissioned by Yorkshire Television to do a brooding type moorland scene for their TV soap "Emmerdale" which he did under the scripted name of 'Nathan Summers'. Soon after he was asked by Tyne Tees Television to do a short series of painting programmes for their regional series. The first three proved to be so successful that a further nine were made. To date more than 70 of the programmes have been made.

As well as being on TV, Charles is now one of the leading demonstrators for Daler-Rowney and he demonstrates all over the country.

He is also making videos for a company called Teaching Art as well as venturing into producing his own videos and DVD's

Recently he made two videos for the Japanese, German, Italian and Netherlands markets. He lives in Northumberland where he writes, does stage shows, workshops and demonstrates to art societies all over the country as well as conducting painting courses in the UK and Europe.

Description

We are privileged to have Charles Evans return to give a 3 day course in watercolour techniques, painting on location and in the studio. Charles teaches by demonstration and one to one tuition thereafter.

If the weather is good then the course will be out on location. The morning session will see a demonstration by Charles and will point out the potential and possibilities of watercolour painting in the chosen landscape. This session will be tutored using a stage-by-stage approach to the painting with Charles working alongside his students.

Students who have chosen to paint a different scene are welcomed and will be tutored at this point in the session. At important stages of development the group will again benefit from demonstrations by Charles as he discusses the chosen subject further. If the weather is not good, indoor workshops will start with a demonstration each day alongside trouble-shooting studio-based exercises. The afternoons will be used to paint stage-by-stage alongside Charles.
